once again ports for SBS 2008

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sbs/cc817589.aspx

You may need to open the following ports, depending on the services you want to make available:

Port 25 TCP – SMTP (Outgoing Exchange e-mail)

Port 80 TCP – HTTP

Port 443 TCP – HTTPS (RWW, OWA, remote desktop or Terminal Server sessions)

Port 987 TCP – External secure Companyweb access

Port 1723 TCP – PPTP (VPN)

If port 80 is not open, then you must specify https:// for RWW connections; otherwise if port 80 is open you can use http:// and the session will be redirected automatically to port 443. If your router is configured to use UPnP, the Internet Address Management Wizard (IAMW) will open port 80

load 32bit printer driver in SBS 2008 (x64)

Konica Minolta C352 and HP DesignJet T610 both got x64 bit drivers, so loading those shouldn't be a problem.

If configure the SBS 2008 as a printer server, you can load x32 bit driver as well, so user dont have look else where.

to load x32 bit driver, right-click in the printer folder, server properties, driver tab add driver x86, then browse to dowloaded x32 bit driver and load driver.

then on x32 bit client PC, just double-click on the printer, the driver will be loaded.

configure TZ 200 sonicwall - use wizards to configure just like EBS/SBS of MS

TZ 170 is slow handling 25 users.

now TZ 200 is used instead.

well, the problem with it is not new. manually doing it is Not working for incoming connections.

the proper way to setup is to
1. add network objects
2. add services
3. group objects
4. run wizards    (especially the Public server wizards)

the most important thing is now RUN Wizards ... this way will auto-populate some NAT rules which are not present in manually configuring simply firewall rules like lan-wan, wan-lan
Public Server Configuration Summary

Please review the settings below and click "Apply" to create the new objects listed below.

Server Address Objects

2. Reuse 'WAN Primary IP' address object assigned to WAN Zone for 2xx.xxx.xx.xx.

Server Service Group Object

1. Create 'SonicwallTZ200mgmt Services' with HTTPS Management Service.

Server NAT Policies

1. Create Inbound Server NAT Policy to rewrite packets to original destination 'WAN Primary IP' to translated destination 'SonicwallTZ200mgmt Private'.

2. Create Outbound Server NAT Policy to rewrite packets from 'SonicwallTZ200mgmt Private' to translated source 'WAN Primary IP'.

3. Create Loopback NAT Policy to allow access from all internal zones to the server at public IP address 2xx.xxx.xx.xx.

Server Access Rules

1. WAN > LAN - Allow 'Any' to 'WAN Primary IP' for Service Group 'SonicwallTZ200mgmt Services'.

Similar rules will be created from all lower security zones to the LAN zone.

To apply these settings, click Apply.

yeah, I recover a domain controller (PDC) even if there is still errors in AD systemstate (NTBACKUP fail)

the problem with the netbt is that sysvol, netlogon not available, it wont authenticate users, hence exchange users' owa wont work, funny exmerge works.

maybe I should have tried

well, there isn't a exchange delegation wizard, in exchange 2010, didn't see that.

It is all RBAC now.

goto http://servername/ecp to assign roles or additional roles to the stardom. you double click on a role group, something will pop up, and your add someone to the group.

it seems many tools in exchange 2010 are web-based, like mail-tracking,...

MSP managed service trial ... what a bad start ..or what a couple of bad start ...

yeah n-able vs kaseya .... I didn't do the actual trial. But I did see something in the test eviroment.

with n-able agent installed, one server's cpu usage shoot to 100%.

after an un-install failure of kaseya agent, another server totally stuffed.

fix SBS 2008 sharepoint 3.0

its quite painfull.

during install, things not went well as I saw a msg asking for username/password.

then I found out the SBS console can't detect internal website.

then I started messing up WSS3.0 website. initially I can see the admin site, but can't see the companyweb http 404 error.

eventually all disappeared on me. re-run sharepoint configuration wizard getting no where. the error is an upgrade is already in place. eventually I stuffed the admin site like cannot connect to the database.
http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2009/05/06/companyweb-inaccessible-after-sharepoint-3-0-service-pack-2.aspx

this cmd is userful to get going: psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force

then I got my admin site back, but companyweb still blank.. or gave me a default II7 website.

now I need re-create the companyweb, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd560621(WS.10).aspx

here is the highlight

In Security Configuration, click the following settings:

For Authentication provider, click NTLM.

For Allow Anonymous, click No.

For Use SSL, click Yes.

For Load Balanced URL, verify that the settings are as follows:

In URL, the setting should be https://sites:987. If this is the setting, do not modify it. If it is not, clear the field, and then type https://sites:987.

In Zone, the setting should be Default.

Set the binding information by doing the following:

Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.

On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

In the Edit Site Binding dialog, enter the following settings:

In Type, click http.

In IP address, click All Unassigned.

In Port, type 80.

In Host name, type Companyweb.

Click OK, and then click Close.

there is also a article about sbs wss3 database security ... need manually open it to check read-only fasle.

another hint is that SBS WSS seemed tied to one administrator. if you login as another admin you may get a security permission error.

what a drama...

group policy user policy and preferences

user policy will disappear when the user logs off. But the user preferences will stay on.

group policy which takes precedence? computer settings or user

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc785665(WS.10).aspx

the word is

The Group Policy objects (GPOs) that apply to a user (or computer) do not all have the same precedence. Settings that are applied later can override settings that are applied earlier.

so the user settings can over-ride the computer settings at the same level because the computer policy applied first.

what ya did didn't fix the problem

what ya did didn't fix the problem ... first ... phone hang up without any reason ....
then did a remote patch of a client PC , and they said the CAD PC as slow as before.

I always suspected those slowness problem at that d0emed site was due to a cabling problem. they use phone patch panel instead of data patch panel.

this could give rise to funny problems like excel sadden hung-up.

Windows server backup wont backup exchange 2007

in the good old days, NTbackup can backup exchange 2003 to a monolithic file.

but, in windows 2008, the builtin windows server backup can't do that anymore.

date/clock not right and certificate problem on the HP ML 100 G6

not quite sure why the date/clock went back to 1987, hence the certificate xpired in 1989.

the clock reset may be due to the smartcd being run.

anyway, I have to get clock corret. the do my favorite

net time /querysntp

by default, it will be time.windows.com

net time /setsntp: localsntpserver

then in certificate authority, generate a new one.

however, the proper way to do this, is to run fix network wizard, the wizard will detect expired certs, and put things right.

update HP ML110 G6 Bios, and trying to update the firmware on IBM x3250

download the bios update from HP site, run the setup file, it will create a bootable USB key drive. gone the days of using a bootable cd. I couldn't find my 256MB HP usb key drive at the time, so I used my 4GB rundisk thumb drive. well it will wipe it and format it as new bootable drive.
it will rename the USB key as ROMPAQ. plug in the key to the system, upon reboot, the system will update from the USB drive. of course don't yank the power cable off the PC server in the process.

compared with the IBM x3250, the x3250 firmware seems like a xml file. I haven't got time to figure out how to using it. yeah, the bios is not the traditional one, its called uefi, or uEFI, UEFI whatever the fancy name.

here is the filelist ROMPAQ,

Volume in drive X is ROMPAQ

Volume Serial Number is 06F8-E6D9

IBMBIO, IBMDOS looks like familiar? that makes me feel I were going back in time back in 1986.

interestingly, HP put a linux touch on this update package.

MS EBS and SBS 2008 server

never do things via the old w2003 MMC console. do everything from EBS/SBS mgmt console (ie using wizards)

Xen 5.5 and IBM x3250 M3

installed xen 5.5 on x3250 M3, initially it hesitated to detect the raid controller. eventually it installed.

the drama unfolded when I tried to restore the image to the Xen box.

shadow Protect IT Q1 2010 just can't start the VM.

so I tried a SP 3.5.1 CD, it wont start in 2003 lagcy mode, but it started in vista mode.

then there is a problem with networking. the static IP won't work, so I have to turn on the DHCP server.

anyway there is a Xen Server 5.5 update 2. maybe I need use that for a start

HP ML110 G6 SBS 2008 reload

the domain name is Not correct for some reason, it looks like mypdc.mypdc.myoooph.local for whatever reason.

now I need re-load the whole thing.

I put in HP utils cd, reset all drives, and I have re-install all from scratch from CD/DVD media.

I couldn't find SBS 2008 HP brand in the list during the process, so I choose the generic one.

the problem is the network driver couldn't be found, luckily it find in the CD. But other drivers can't be installed that way.

tricky IBM x3250 mounting kits

yeah I should read TFM. But the IBM mounting kits still seemed overly complex.

install a smallbiz server 2008 on HP ML110 G6

this SBS 2008 server is pre-loaded. off course various wizard need to be run.

it takes more than two hours.

it depreciate the user administrator as an admin user name.

also it doesn't like myooph.local as the internal domain name because you only type myooph as the domain name. everything else is appended.

at one stage it asked to be connected to the internet. otherwise I can't click the ---> button.

at the end of the day, it takes bit long to shutdown as well. this is typical of smallbiz servers like v2003

what a drama.

sonciwall device and syslogs

a TZ 180 device with 2 syslog PCs linked, it seemed fine.

HYPER-V R2 continued

my default hyper-v installation used about 7.2GB disk space.

hyper-V manager in my windows 2008 and windows 7 need be manually enabled in control panel - program features.

pity I didn't see via the hyper-v manager or the HYPER-V console, how big my hard drive is, how much is my memory...

however from the command line, systeminfo still works in the hyper-v console

well, I am told to go back to Xen 5.5.

I jsut pray Citrix will keep Xen Server alive.

install Sonicwall 6.0 UTM viewpoint

when I installed version 4.1, I have to un-install it and re-install it after the PC ip address change.

this time, things may be different, but I un-installed anbd re-innstalled anyway.

convert a physical machine to a virtual hard drive

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415.aspx

its a sysinternals program

Hyper-V R2 standalone disc - first impression

installed hyper-V R2 DVD on an IBM x3250 M3, it took a couple of hours.

by defaulty it is in workgroup mode. I need run the menu  to enable remote management.

then I cant seem to manage the the hyper-v machine because my Windows 2008 R2 is in the domain.

so I joined the hyper-v machine to the domain, then enabled the hyper-v manager in the W2008 control panel - program features.

also I need to do the same in Windows 7 to enable hyper-v manager access to the host.

IBM x3250 M3 and wrong upgrade memory

dsitributor send us wrong memory upgrade kit specified in IBM Tools (?).

the result is the server won't boot into loading windows/setup program... it will stuck with uefi ...starting

with pre-installed 2GB it is all fine.

when thos upgrade ram installed separately, the boot process stuck at uefi starting, and orange led ! is on

PPTP jungle

when you do pptp in a private subnet, you can't connect to yourself.

interesting is that worked last week when I was working on a vista PC. the pptp server is a windows xp pro, surprisingly I can pptp back.

But at another location, pptp started verifying u/p, eventually fail. probably because there is a sonicwall at this site.

outlookanywhere outlook 2010 beta or outlook 2003/2007, does it matter?

quite tricky for me, when I put another test domain on my test box.

outlook20033/outlook2007 threw me an error "The name cannot be matched to a name in the address list".

But in outlook 2010 beta, I can configure outlook anywhere. it seemed working.

second round of Microsoft Audit

second round of Microsoft Audit ....

last time, I did the audit for this client back in 2006.

now they received letter from Microsoft agent that there going to be another one.

I doubt there is much juice in this case as this client buying office licenses and windows license religiously.

luckily they didn't do any server upgrade for years.

Hyper-V R2

yeah, I downloaded MS Hyper-V R2, and burnt into DVD.

it is a standalone product, and it support live migration?  compared with Xen, it is huge in size. Xen only needs one CD.

given some not too old IBM servers, only has CDROM, not DVD-ROM

telecom ADSL router forwarding

this particular router forwarding by mac address in the subnet. I can't specify pinholes by IP address for some reason. I have to find out the MAC address of the server NIC.

continue to kill virus in the afternoon anti virus vista 2010

avast! pro failed to stop/kill the trojan. av.exe

used microsoft security essentials to remove it, well after the removal, I can't run exe files.

that needs a registry fix.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-antivirus-vista-2010

get the registry fix file, and merge it.

other tricks: rename regedit.exe to regedit.com, use command.com, then run cmd

anyway, the reg file is critical,

ATF - Cleaner and Ccleaner

ccleaner can only clean cuurent user profile?

ATF can clean all users profile ... it seems it only has XP version?

prepare windows EBS server installation

EBS is like a huge SBS server.

you need to run pre-installation preparation wizard on another pc. you need install EBS server in 30 days after you run that wizard.

yer, that is like SBS 2008 which everything is done under wizard.

I would really like to install all those boll0cks manually. it looks like the free wheeling days are gone.

symantec endPoint protection 11.0.5

symantec corp anti-virus v.10.x is too old for vista and Windows 7.

install SEP 11.0.5 server, download a couple of CDs.

unzipped it, and installed it.

IIS need be installed first, then the rest should be click on next

what to do when file server got bad clusters

once bad clusters found in the server, it is better login as the admin user, and copy everything off the server.

as once the server turned off, it may never start up again.

linux smb share

linux smb share, when copy all files in the share, it is better login as root user, otherwise some users files wouldn't be copied, no warning given...
then there is a kernel panic ... go figure...

corrupted Excel 2007 file

a user opened a excel 2007, freezing. re-opened it, started recovery, excel said recovery failed because its corrupted.

then the file's status shows it is repiared. going in a circle.

I ended up disabling power saving, installed Office 2007 SP2.

Mdamon disabled users

the default behavior is to bounce the the disabled user emails. this seemed different from exchange server

cannot print screen, print error on a local financial package

Kerry's printer wont print over the network, or print some pages in their financial software.

checked the log, it seems the printer had a driver update in the morning.

delete the network shared printer and restart the notebook, it can print in that software now.

I wonder there is something inside that software handle print as well.
