EATON UPS installation on windows 2008 R2 and SBS 2011 - what a shocking bizare experience

EATON UPS installation on windows 2008 R2 and SBS 2011 - what a shocking bizare experience

I finally reproduced the problem and my Taiwanese English got better

I had this problem back in October on a Dell server. after wasting a few days trying to figure out, Dell suggested we re-install the server from scratch. But 3rd party software vendors already spent more than 100 hours on it. Yes, Dell is correct in saying their hardware is alright.

this month, I am a on project installing a SBS 2011 for  a customer. this server is based on a supermicro mainboard.

again , after loading the Eaton UPS software on the new server, upon restarting, I saw the dreaded message again " your computer need a restart to apply the changes" .

oh dear, this time I am almost sure its UPS software since its the last thing I installed. this time, no windows updates involved.

UPS software did prompt me to install an update, I ignored initially. now I installed it.

after another restart, another bizzare problem pop up, the UPS software can't see the UPS, oh dear I figured this out by clicking set ups on one of the tabs or something rather....

I wonder what happened to APC ... , I have to struggle with Eaton.... well ... I am not the decision maker......

I feel relieved that I finally have the answer for this problem " Your Computer need a reboot ..." before the New Years' EVE....
\

yeah , life will go on with or without a UPS

人生奋斗的最高境界:

http://bbs.creaders.net/joke/bbsviewer.php?trd_id=808489&blog_id=134316

do an inplace upgrade of a windows 2008 R2 PDC to server 2012 ?

do an in-place upgrade of a windows 2008 R2 PDC to server 2012 ?

No way, you can't do that, not a PDC upgrade,

what will happen is that the server 2012 will rename the current windows install to windows.old, then install itself as a standalone server....

..... so there is no in-place upgrade path ...

install SCCM 2012 on server 2012

install SCCM 2012 on server 2012

its not going to work straight away....

install sql 2008 R2 express, still no go

eventually I find this article .... dear ... its not going to work out of box...

SCVMM2012 wont work either out of the box

so sccm 2012 is really for w2008 r2 ?

restore windows 2003 server images to windows 2012 hyper-v

windows 2012 hyper-v enabled

use shadowprotect RE 4.1.5 ( OZ support suggested this version) to boot

in the process, the hyper-v got 768MB with 1 CPU, I increased those afterwards.

then restore to a hyper-v machine,

it takes about 2~3 minutes per GB over a network mapped share, so an 18GB C: partition took about 40 minutes

I wonder this got something to do with too many incrementals.

after some restart, I got error mouse not captured in remote desktop session, ....

the issue is I didn't install the integration components properly, that ended up with some yellow dots in device manager.

if auto disabled, I need run the setup file rather run some msi directly

legacy network card can be handy at times

Upload Data to System Center Advisor - manual upload

http://onlinehelp.microsoft.com/en-us/advisor/gg697803.aspx

if you don't want to want and

especially during the initial install

To upload data to Advisor on demand

  1. Package data from the agent and send it to the gateway. To do this, on the computer where the agent is installed, create a file named AgentUpload.cfg, and save it to %Program Files%\System Center Advisor.
    noteNote
The contents of the file are ignored.

When the agent detects this file, it will package the collected data and send it to the gateway. After this is complete, the file itself is deleted.
  2. Trigger the upload of data from the gateway to Advisor. To do this, run the following PowerShell cmdlets on the computer where you installed the gateway:
    add-pssnapin microsoftadvisorsnapin
    Send-SCAdvisorGatewayData

configure site-to-site VPN between TZ180 / TZ 105W and NetScreen concentrator

configure site-to-site VPN between TZ180 / TZ 105configure site-to-site VPN between TZ180 / TZ 105W and NetScreen concentratorW and NetScreen concentrator

configure site-to-site VPN between TZ180 / TZ 105W and NetScreen concentrator
this is a drama
after a client site changed their internet connection to another ISP
the result is the Site-to-site VPN is broken between TZ180 and a NetScreen
the error is remote party time-out ....
I changed lots of settings on the sonicwall side, no luck.
the netscreen guy on the other side said noothing to change at their end... phew ... their configure file is so simple
at some stage , tz180 does show the tunnel is up, but I can't ping the other side, weird ....
long story short ...
the client eventually decided to get a new TZ105
I program the TZ105 like the TZ180....
if the shared secret not typed correctly or a protocol mismatch, you can also get pair-time-out errors in the log
once get the shared secret right, booom.... the VPN is up and running.
btw, for those shared secrets, you better manually type those in...

Microsoft User State Virtualization - the new UE-V

Microsoft User State Virtualization

MS add User Experience Virtualization (UE-V)  in addtition to Folder-redirection and offline files

Microsoft User State Virtualization includes several Windows technologies that together can provide a consistent desktop and application experience for a user across multiple Windows desktops. User State Virtualization provides access to data and personal settings on any device.
User Experience Virtualization (UE-V) synchronizes application and personal settings to a file share in your datacenter. This means that users can move to any device and the settings are copied to the device when required. Application settings are not handled as a single entity such as a user profile, but are treated as separate for each application and synchronized separately. This means that the synchronization task is a small, fast synchronization that occurs after changes have been made and the user locks the screen or logs off the desktop
By adding folder redirection, and offline files if required, users always have access to their data in the same location from every device, providing a seamless desktop experience while enabling users to roam from device to device, or ensuring desktop consistency in the case of a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) pooled deployment

clone a windows 8 disk

or image it to another hard drive

well .... as you know I tried to use the storagecraft shadow protect IT key, but they don't support w8 or server 2012. yeah ... their policy is support those new OS after 3 months

phew ......... its time to find another one and better still a free one

Macrium Reflect v5 is free for personal use ...

I download it, install it in my windows 8 preview

I created the w8 drive image to an external usb drive, 60 GB took about 37 minutes, not bad

then create a rescue disc ... this involves downloading windows waik kit (1.6GB), and customized it...

don't worry, Macrium Reflect handled all this for you....

the rescue disc is only 200MB

ok, ... now I put the 300GB drive in the notebook, start the notebook from CD, restore the image to the 300GB hard drive, this took about 60 minutes.... again not bad....

the fist boot worked straight away ...

I am so impressed by Macrium Reflect

no hassels at all in the process ........

Designed and priced especially for small businesses with up to 75 users, Windows Small Business Server (Windows SBS) 2011 Standard is a complete solution designed for customers who want enterprise-class technologies in an affordable, all-in-one suite.
Built on Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows SBS 2011 Standard includes Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 SP1, Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010, and Windows Server Update Services.

well .... its not the 50 user limit as I perceived previously

imaging using shadow protect IT key ... continued

.... continue my work imaging w-xp over to the new asustek mb based PC

now I am using the SP IT key

started it up, choose W2008 R2 recovery

then click HIR config
it will scan the current installation,
then it will ask for drivers like msahci
I pop the driver cd in the CDROM
browse to the exact driver location ( have to do it again, the first time is too generic, it says it installed , but not)
thanks god
w-xp eventually started ,,, oh dear ... the next screen is windows xp activation.
MS acyivation team is not sympathetic thses days
anyway I activated the XP image
oh dear , what a mission....
as of now, if i use IT key to create an image, I have to use IT key to restore it

shadowProtect backup and restore license problem

eventually I encountered this problem .... I can't restore because the IT edition license is not with me

I seemed to remember I can download a time-limited IT edition ISO, but I don't have a blank CD with me

pretty angry day ....

I am supposed to install a new PC for a guy

but he wanted his current XP PC being imaged over...

they got another guy did a similar thing on another new PC which I fixed the XP license issue (another blog topic)

I have the IT Ed. CD with me so I used it to create the image , the speed is about 26Mb/s ~ 30Mb/s, for more than 100 GB C: drive , it is still a long time, the IT cd will ask for license server for both back and restore; ah...... ; I managed to connect this source PC back to my office PC which the shadow protect IT key license server running ,

I got the source PC's imaged,

now trying to restore to a new PC which has an ASUS MB, I called the PC supplier, they confirmed this MB will run w-xp pro.

I tried IT ed cd v. 4.1.2 , it can boot but can't see the onboard NIC,

tried SP RE 4.1.5 , eventually used this cd to restore , it didn't complain initially, but after 60 miniutes of restoring, there is a message "HIR ... unknown volume"

upon starting the new PC, I see the blue screen ...

start the new PC with the IT cd and RE CD, the it cd asking for license (it is a licensed image, dispointing, ) the RE CD reported that the image key is missing, ah........... I used the IT ed created the image properly

very upset , just because I don't have the IT ED USb key with me

use GParted to resize a windows 7 partition

my notebook an ancient amd turion x64, running w7 x64, the C: drive size is 49GB, running out of space, I need 10GB from the D: drive (99GB with 16GB free).

so I downloaded the free gparted iso, burn the cd, boot my notebook with the gparted cd

and shrink the D: drive, and move the partition to the right, and extend the C: drive

alas, it took about 3 hours to make all the changes...

and what is is more , in a rush to re-size the partition, I didn't do the RTFM, oh,.. dear, apparently blue screen may happen doing this way according to Gparted website doc.

if that happens, I have to ge a w7 x64 repair disc

luckiy for me, blue screen does not show up for me.

it works on the first boot after resizing

get jmail.dll working on Windows 2008 R2 domain controller

as you probably know I migrated someone's windows 2000 domain to a windows 2008 R2 domain

I have copied customer's apps and data over , the software vendor was at the scene. we installed his apps' dlls; everything seemed working last friday , but some apps just wont run on the new w2008 R2 server; program devolper fixed some; but the mailcatcher program just wont run, it wont get messages from pop server on the internet

John eventually told me, he uses a jmail.dll; how do I get this dll to work on a x64 server, luckily I found

this works for me and the customer, they said I am a genius, but just no ipads  ihone5, ..i messages

Solution
Please follow the steps below:
  1. First of all if you have already registered the DLL in x64 Operating System the unregister the DLL. To do that just type the following in the run command “regsvr32 /u ” something like “regsvr32 /u C:\MyDLL\ASXUpload.DLL”. If you have already unregistered the DLL from the x64 OS then no need to run this step.
  2. Also make sure that you have not kept your DLL inside the Windows folder which is normally C:\Windows. For this example I have kept the DLL in the following folder C:\MyDLL.
  3. Now we need to add the COM+ Components using Component Services of Microsoft. To start Component Services, go to Control Panel / Administrative Tools/ Component Services. Once inside component Services, drill down into Computers, then My Computer, then COM+ Applications. Then Right-click on COM+ Applications and choose “New” -> “Application”.
  4. At “Welcome to the COM Application Install Wizard” screen, click “Next >”.
  5. Click on “Create an Empty Application” button.
  6. Enter the name. Since my DLL name is ASXUpload.dll so I have typed in the name as “ASXUpload”. When asked “Library or Server”, select “Server”.
  7. Click “Next >” button and then choose “This User”.
  8. Enter the User or click Browse to select the user. Clicking Browse is safer, to ensure that the correct domain and spelling are used. Enter the password and confirm the password. Warning, be sure to include the domain/username if required. Click on “Finish”. (Note: We recommend “This User”, otherwise, someone must be logged onto the server in order for DLL to run.). In my case I have chosen the domain administrator account. You can also add a Service Account. If you are not sure please consult with your system administrator.
  9. Now “Add Application Roles” screen will appear. Do not add anything just click on the “Next >” button.
  10. Now “Add Users to Role” screen appear. Do not add anything just click on the “Next >” button.
  11. Now you will see that under Component Services -> Computers -> My Computer -> COM+ Application -> you will see the newly added application. In this example the application name would be “ASXUpload”. Now drill down the newly added application “ASXUpload” by clicking the “+” icon and you will see “Components”.
  12. Now right-click on “Components” and then choose “New Component”. At “Welcome to the COM Application Install Wizard” screen, click “Next >”.
  13. Click on “Install new component(s)” and now select the DLL which you want to register. In the case it would be “C:\MyDLL\ASXUpload.DLL”.
  14. Once you select the DLL you will see that it will show you the components found. Click on the “Next >” button to proceed and finally hit the “Finish” button to complete.
  15. Now is the tricky part. Right click on the application you have added which you will find under Component Services -> Computers -> My Computer -> COM+ Application. In my case the application name is “ASXUpload”. After you right click on the Application select “Properties”. The application properties window will open up. Click on the “Security” tab. In the Security tab make sure that under “Authorization” section the checkbox “Enforce access checks for this application” is unchecked.
Under “Security Level” section select the radio button “Perform access checks only at the process level. Security property will not be included on the object context. COM+ security call context will not be available.”
Make sure that option “Apply restriction policy” is unchecked.
Set “Impersonate Level” to “Anonymous”
  1. If you want to access the DLL from web Application then make sure that you add the IUSR and IWAM account. To do this go to COM+ Application -> Application Name (In this case it will be ASXUpload) -> Roles -> CreateOwner -> Users. Right click on the Users and add the IUSR and IWAM account used by Internet Information Server.
  2. Also set the NTFS permission on the folder where you kept the DLL. In this case I have kept the DLL inside the folder C:\MyDLL. Now right click on the folder “MyDLL” and go to the security tab and then add the IUSR and IWAM account.

upgrade a windows 2000 domain to windows 2008 R2 domain

a good source is here

http://stevejenkins.com/blog/2010/01/migrating-an-active-directory-domain-controller-from-windows-2000-to-windows-2008-r2/

here is what I did

- I am not quite there is No official support upgrading from w2000 DC to w2008 R2 DC; as windows 2008 R2's minimum function level is windows 2000 native. so it must be a supported migration path

- install windows 2008 R2

- give it static IP on the domain

- join the domain

- extend the schema on the windows 2000 PDC and extend the domain ( I wonder I need extend the group policy as well)

- in my case, I need raise the domain function level to windows 2000 native (it was on mixed mode, which means NT4 DC allowed)

- add AD DS role, eventually run DC promo, follow the on-screen intructions, namely join to the existing forest, current domain, make sure this is a DC+GC

- eventually you will restart the new server

- after restart, check the log, make sure AD replicated properly

- then transfer 5 FSMO roles over, in ADUC and AD forest trust , connect to the other DC, click change

- run netdom /query fsmo  to make sure the roles are transferred over to the new domain controller (see I am not a new bee)

- overall, there should be 6 roles on the new server -- 5 FSMOs + Global Catalogue

- I left this running over nite

- on the second day, checks log again on both server, it looks normal

- stop the dhcp service on the old w2k server

- re-configure dns and dhcp entries to use only the new server

- run dcpromo on the windows 2000 DC to demote it to a member server

- copy files over to the new server

- modify login scripts to point shares to the new server

- ahhh, the NAP-RASMGMT is a pain

problem configuring nic teaming on a Dell T320

problem configuring team on a Dell T320

just can't find the teaming options , cannot add localhost; the trick is

http://forum.broadcom.com/showthread.php?1739-BACS4-Netxtreme-II-1GB-Unable-to-connect-to-localhost-win2008-R2

copy/paste here

to get it work, you have to install this from Server Administrator DVD:
sysmgmt\srvadmin\support\brcm_snmp_64bit\setup.exe
and add to selection: CIM PROVIDER and BASP

in my case; I still can't do that for a different reason;

the windows 2008 R2 / sp1 said cannot find file umbraler.msi

or something rather

I search the C: drive and it located at
Directory of C:\Windows\DownloadC:\Windows\Downloaded Installations\{857654A7-7536-4077-A9EB-18424
075A67}
8/09/2012  07:39 p.m.        30,
              1 File(s)     30,6
    Total Files Listed:
18/09/2012  07:39 p.m.        30,674,432 Umbrella.msi

then in add/remove program pointing to the right location
select snmp;CIM and BASP features

ok, the nics are showing up

stay tuned

what is exFat file systems

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT

http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2801/exfat_versus_fat32_versus_ntfs/

in short MS is still extending its FAT ,

I see options after I shrink my test server 2012 primary partition, and create a new one with 220GB,

my options are exFAT (not FAT32 , I wonder because FAT32 can't handle the 220GB in one partition in server 2012)

NFTS

ReFS .... yeah, funny it can't be boot partition , refer to Tim's youtube video

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb201691.aspx

its not installed by default on exchange 2010 hub transport,

quite useful for blocking users sending to non-users in AD

You need to be assigned permissions before you can perform this procedure. To see what permissions you need, see the "Hub Transport server" entry in the Transport Permissions topic.
  1. Run the following command from the %system drive%/Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Scripts folder.
    .\install-AntispamAgents.ps1

  2. After the script has run, restart the Microsoft Exchange Transport service by running the following command.

outlook 2010 cache auto-complete not working

http://www.sevenforums.com/microsoft-office/77747-outlook-2010-autocomplete.html

I copy the parts that worked for me here

SECTION 2 - SUCCESS
===================================

The suggestion that DID work for me involved downloading software called NK2 EDIT. I believe Outlook versions prior to 2010 used a data file with the NK2 extension to store auto-complete cache info. OL 2010 does not use this type of file, it uses the Stream_Autocomplete###.dat file instead. NK2 EDIT software (free) works with BOTH TYPES of files and can easily convert either type to the other.

Before attempting to fix the problem, I first made sure my contacts were updated - this is important if you want to have a good list of auto-complete contacts. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE that the auto-complete contacts that appear when typing in addresses ARE NOT POPULATED AUTOMATICALLY BY OUTLOOK FROM YOUR CONTACTS/ADDRESS BOOK(S). Outlook is supposed to automatically create auto-complete addressed based on who you send emails to - not simply by whether or not they exist in your addressbook. Here is a run down of how I fixed the problem using NK2 Edit:

1. Open the address book for Outlook and organize and cleanup all contacts in all address books. Make sure that anyone you want to appear in the auto-complete is IN THE ADDRESS BOOK.
2. Close Outlook and open NK2 Edit. Open/Start a NEW NK2 file.
3. Go to Action > Add Records from Address Book
4. Select all of the contacts that you want to appear in the auto-complete list. This shouldn't necessarily be all of your contacts! (For example, if you have five contacts named John, but four of them you haven't emailed in a few years and the other one you email every day -- you should probably only add the one that you email every day. Otherwise, every time you start to type his name in the To: field, you'll have to select the right John out of a list of five.)
5. Once the list is complete, SAVE the list as an NK2 file with a name that makes sense for future reference, such as "Outlook 2010 Auto-Complete Cache File, created in NK2Edit, 2011.11.17". This file will serve as a backup in case the cache file ever becomes corrupted again.
6. Now for getting this file to play nicely with Outlook! First make sure Outlook is NOT running. Then, go to: File > Save As. Browse to the C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\RoamCache folder and OVERWRITE the existing Stream_Autocomplete###.DAT file. To do this you'll have to use the drop-down box under the file name box to change the file type from NK2 to DAT.
7. Close NK2 Edit, and open Outlook. Verify that the auto-complete list now matches the list you created in NK2 Edit by typing a few email address into a new email message.

ShadowProtect StorageCraft training

a full day training on ShadowProtect StorageCraft ... presented by StorageCraft APAC experts , shall I say

here are some notes from the seminar

there is bug with version 4.0.5, problem checking a dirty FAT table; so update it to the latest version as soon as possible

windows vss can only do 1 per hours, shadowprotect vss can do per 15 mins

avoid run those two at the same time, so shadowprotect not on the hour

for performance , use fixed-page file and 4*memory as virtul mem

watch disk queue length, it should be less than 2 per spindle

use separae jobs per volume, but for exchange server, use one jobs for logs/dbs

be carefull with sql maintenance plan, it is a hidden vss on its own

image-manager can be used for verify image and collapsing image, quite intensive cpu / network usage

you can use NAS as IR

which two files shadowprotect do not backup? page file and hibenate file?

to recover 2003 DC, you need edit reg, set USN, set time zone correct

to start cmd do CTRL+Shift+F12 ( this is windows PE)

always do chkdsk

fix drive letter

disable vendor specific services like cpq

check boot configuration

before doing restor, (or HSR), edit disk policy, disk geometry, change track -- sector

restore mbr -- restore original mbr from the image file
restore disk hidden track (s/w license like autocad, sbs 2008 pki)
ShadowControl iFTP Version 5  --- for backup on low latency and 2Mbit link
ShadowControl ShadowStream Server Version 5 for high latency and fat bandwidth, need heaps ports open, better with site-2-site vpn

ShadowControl CMD -- still in early version, like a control panel

WatchDog -- like n-able / kaseya , -- good for monitoring disk events

trial microsoft intune

I heard of intune more than 1 year ago.

it can't do servers.

it may be good for standone alone PCs, but it doesn't care about whether its domain joined or not.

portal.microsoftonline.com

there is an administration portal not the one above,

you can do remote session using live meeting, which is very slow

in the portal you can check software installed, restart the PC ( not readily available inside N-able)

of course , check the updates ( in conflict with current update policies, because my two test pCs are all domain joined, got separate policies)

it can do anti-virus which is good

it is Not cheap !

I yet to check to see if it can monitor system perfomance. well it should ... as I reckon MS want it to run again Kesaya or N-able

on a windows 2008 hyper-v v1 machine, create a 25GB vhd file, 1.5GB ram with 1 cpu

phew .... installation took 30 minutes

the interface style is similar to w8 desktop, but only with server manager pop up on the desktop.

looks like flat-panel off-course,

on the server manager ,
network teaming,
server pool
server group
windows live - online backup

are all on the interface

shutdown is swift with only file and storage role installed

I am impressed

local telecom call / fax diversion how to

local telecom call / fax diversion how to

I just copy and paste from local telecom user guide

so the steps are

1/ before I cut the wire,

dial 181 161 the number to divert to, or foward to , telecom call it divert

2/  dial 161 to activate

3/ dial 160 to cancel

4/ you must be at the premise to do that

5/ if not, you have to use remote divert, that mean you pay more

6/ I diverted serval numbers, I can;t seem to hear the confirmation tone as in the telecom guide.

7/ for the first phone number, a fax machine (not a tradional phone), ricoh MFC (hasn't got a handset), I paunched the sequence, it actually worked, it bit tricky to test, as incoming phone calls still showing up on the dash board (?). eventually I connected a traditional phone set to that line, yes, it was correctly diverted

8/ after diversion, you can still make out-going phone calls, but the dial-tone changed to one-long and one-short

Setting up Call Diversion
To programme each number you want your calls diverted

to:

Lift the handset and wait for the dial tone

Dial 181, followed by a code number between 161

and 169

Dial the number to which calls are to be diverted,

restore shadow protect images to Xen 6.0.2 server

restore shadow protect images to Xen 6.0.2 server, stick the USB disc straight to Xen

i should lesten to T-manager's work, I should stick the USB drive (with the images) to the Xen server directly.

bad habit resisting changing

restoring shadow protect image from a network share, the speed is about 6.78Mps over a 100Mbit link.

this used to be 3.3Mps with Xen 5.x

eventually , I plug in the USB drive directly to the Xen server . making it available by attaching it.

whoola, the speed is 18Mps, great, its about 3 times faster,

this combined with head-start restore makes things easier...
