salvage my work notebook HP 6715b --- move the hard drive to another HP compaq nc6400

salvage my work notebook HP 6715b (since 2006) --- move the hard drive to another HP compaq nc6400

the night before , I clapped the lid of my outdated HP 6715b and went to bed.

in the morning, pushed the button, trying to wake it up, this time, nothing showing on the screen, nothing even after dismantled it

the hard drive is loaded with windows 7 x64 ultimate

first , I did a bios upgrade on the nc6400 with the file on hp site.

pulled out the hard drive and put into another HP compaq nc6400

push the button, blue screen,  BSOD 0x0000007B

its about the hard drive storage controller driver (actually its not, as I found out later)

in an effort to inject drivers, I took an in-place image of the hard drive (using storagecraft shadowprotect IT key), and restored the image.

this time, there is no blue screen, bit it crashed to a crash menu, like

put in your windows disc and click repair

iastor.sys corrupted ....

I somehow injected many versions of iastor.sys, still the same error, if I deleted the iastor.sys , I would get the BSOD again.

I do have w7 x64 repair disc, I popped the disc in, and started the repair, ......, no luck.

I do have the original w7 x64 disc, popped disc in, and started the repair, ...., no luck

then in the BIOS, change SATA mode to disabled, change IDE mode from bi-shifted to LBA-assisted.
( I had this kind of issues with HP machines, things like IDE mode, AHCI, UEFI etc, but I thought w7 x64 can handle those, load properly drivers upon detecting new hardware)

then the notebook can start to safe mode and load drivers

interestingly HP does not put any w7 driver for nc6400, compared with the 6715b HP even has UEFI firmware.

there is a w7 x32 bit driver listed in their forum, its a dropbox link. but I couldn't use it as my w7 is x64.

eventually I booted my hard drive to w7 x64 on the nc6400, in the device manager lots of yellow marks.

downloaded various versions of inf update files from intel site.

downloaded vista drivers from HP site, installed and un-installed and installed again,

some issues bugged me, the display was showing as a problem, and the wireless is not showing up. there are also issues with mass storage and simple comms.

eventually loaded the TI drive for the mass storage. disabled / enable the wireless many times to get wireless up and working ( have to re-enter the wireless password). I had this wireless issue before with the 6715b when I updated the OS to w7.

now I got two days to re-activate w7 x64 ultimate

weird shadow protect image / restore issue - server rebooted to crash menu

server 2012 R2 test machine, got 3 drives

I wanted replace drive C: with a bigger hard drive

I booted from IT edition , take the C: drive image

put the bigger hard drive in, and restored image,

to my horror, upon reboot, the server crashed to the recovery menu

now the real recovery begins,

1/ put the original disk drive back, the same thing happened, I restarted and restarted , eventually choose debug mode, then the server boot to normal mode

so I took an image again, and restore again, shiit, the same thing happened, this time I choose Last known good configuration,  the server boot to normal mode. but the computer name changed to soemthing like win-ananan, like assumed a name of windows PE. and hyper-v switch all got scrabbled. I have to remove the hyper-v role, move off the domain, rename , re-join the domain, and re-add hyper-v role, and set the configuration location exactly as before, then it pick up all existing settings and VMs,

phew ... what a day

--- Shadow Protect support send me a long checklist

- including 1/ run check disk on the drive
2/ set policy to sector
3/ in HIR (even at the same machine ?) use good match
4/ also suggested delete BCD and re-build BCD
5/ patch MBR , but this is windows server 2012 R2?

In-Place Hold support on Office 365 MidSize Business?

unfortunately, nope

http://community.office365.com/en-us/f/148/t/257725.aspx

have confirmed that enabling In-Place Hold in midsize plan is a bug, and we will fix that. Once the fix goes out, midsize SKUs will NOT have access to this functionality. In-Place Hold is deemed a premium feature available with Exchange Online Plan 2 license only.

Types of files that cannot be added to a list or library - one drive - sharepoint online

here are certain types of files that you cannot upload to a SharePoint list or a library. By default, SharePoint blocks certain file types.
For example, if .asp is on the list of blocked file extensions, a file called "newpage.asp" is blocked. Variations of a file extension are also blocked. The following list shows different ways of representing the same file, all of which are blocked if the .hta extension is on the list of blocked file extensions.
  • filename.hta
  • filename.hta.
  • filename.hta.{3050F4D8-98B5-11CF-BB82-00AA00BDCE0B}
  • filename.hta::$DATA

The list of files that is blocked for SharePoint Online is different from the list of files that is blocked for on-premises deployments of SharePoint Foundation or SharePoint Server.

https://support.office.com/en-nz/article/Types-of-files-that-cannot-be-added-to-a-list-or-library-30be234d-e551-4c2a-8de8-f8546ffbf5b3?ui=en-US&rs=en-NZ&ad=NZ

Blocked file types for SharePoint Online

The list of blocked file types cannot be changed for a SharePoint Online site.

.ashx
ASP.NET Web handler file. Web handlers are software modules that handle raw HTTP requests received by ASP.NET.
.asmx
ASP.NET Web Services source file
.json
JavaScript Object Notation file
.soap
Simple Object Access Protocol file
.svc
Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) service file
.xamlx

estrictions and limitations when you sync SharePoint libraries to your computer through OneDrive for Business Print Print Email Email

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2933738

Number of items that can be synced

  • You can sync up to 20,000 items in your OneDrive for Business library. This includes folders and files.
  • You can sync up to 5,000 items in a SharePoint library. This includes folders and files. These are the libraries that you find on various SharePoint sites, such as team sites and community sites, libraries that other people created, or that you created from your Sites page. This also includes syncing other people's OneDrive personal sites that you may have access to. You can sync multiple SharePoint libraries.

Size limit for syncing files

In any SharePoint library, you can sync files of up to 2 gigabytes (GB).

Character limit for files and folders

These limits apply to files and folders that you add to a synced library folder for uploading to SharePoint.
  • In SharePoint Server 2013, file names can have up to 128 characters.
  • In SharePoint Online, file names can have up to 256 characters.
  • Folder names can have up to 250 characters.
  • Folder name and file name combinations can have up to 250 characters.

Invalid characters

SharePoint Online
The following characters in file names aren't supported when you sync OneDrive for Business with SharePoint Online:

%
Additionally, a file name that begins with a tilde (~) isn't supported.

SharePoint Server 2013
The following characters in file name aren't supported when you sync OneDrive for Business with SharePoint Server 2013:

&
A file name that begins with a period (.) or a tilde (~) isn't supported.

Unsupported folder name

When you sync OneDrive for Business with SharePoint Online or SharePoint 2013, a folder named "forms" isn't supported at the root level for a list or library. This occurs because "forms" is a hidden default folder that's used to store templates and forms for the library.

GUID strings as file names

The GUID string structure is supported in SharePoint Online.

The following GUID string structure isn't supported for file names in SharePoint 2013:

'{' + 8 hexadecimal + '-' + 4 hexadecimal + '-' + 4 hexadecimal + '-' + 4 hexadecimal + '-' + 12 hexadecimal +'}'
For example, a GUID that matches this structure resembles the following:
{9b6634a7-26b7-40a2-a48e-6f967d89c29e}

Invalid file types

You can't upload files that have a *.tmp or *.ds_store extension, and you can't upload desktop.ini, thumbs.db, or ehthumbs.db files.

Additionally, you can't upload files whose file types are blocked on the SharePoint site. If your organization is running SharePoint Server, the list of blocked files may vary, depending on what your administrator sets up. If your organization is running SharePoint Online, the default list of blocked files is fixed and can't be changed. To see a list of the default blocked files, go to the following Microsoft website:

OneNote notebooks

Because OneNote notebooks have their own sync mechanism, they aren't synced by the OneDrive for Business sync client. You can upload OneNote notebooks to a SharePoint Online page. However, they won't sync with through the OneDrive for Business sync client application. Additionally, if you add a OneNote notebook to a local folder that syncs with SharePoint Online, the notebook won't sync with the SharePoint site and may cause other sync errors within the local folder.

Open files can't be synced

Any file that’s currently open by an application (for example, an Excel .xlsx file) can't be synced by OneDrive for Business.

To sync the file, close any application where the file is currently being used, and then sync the file.

Lookup columns in a library

The SharePoint Online or OneDrive for Business library can't exceed the lookup column threshold. For more information, go to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
2927386 "We couldn’t sync this library" error when you use the OneDrive for Business sync client

Additional resources

For more information about how to resolve problems that you might have with the OneDrive for Business sync client, go to the following Microsoft website:
For more information about the characters that you can't use in site names, folder names, and file names in earlier versions of SharePoint, go to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

Dell

Dear PocketCloud customer,
In 2009, PocketCloud was created to help people access their PCs from mobile devices anywhere. After June 30, 2015, Dell will discontinue support for PocketCloud.
Once the product is discontinued, the PocketCloud Remote Desktop app can be used in Manual mode, but auto-discovery and Cloudbin storage will no longer be available. Please keep in mind that Dell will no longer support the product and cannot ensure that PocketCloud will continue to work for you past June 30, 2015.

office 365 for Mac

http://redmondmag.com/articles/2014/10/31/outlook-for-mac-for-office-365.aspx

Microsoft recommends removing Outlook for Mac 2011 before running Outlook for Mac for Office 365, although there's no explanation about why it's recommended. The two solutions can run side by side. Installing Outlook for Mac for Office 365 does not automatically remove Outlook for Mac 2011
