setup an legacy panasonic DP-8020E MFC printer on windows server 2012 - my friday horror series continues

setup an legacy panasonic DP-8020E MFC printer on windows server 2012

the surprise is Panasonic does have a windows 2012 server driver for such an old model.

the tricky thing is that the model I am working on hasn't got a PCL module, or so I think,

I tried PCL driver fruitlessly, finally got the GDI driver working, didn't dare to try the PS driver.

who would think that huge monster wouldn't have a PCL module? PCL driver  prints null, but it wont give an error.

windows server 2012 hyper-v and realvnc interesrt behaviour

the week before I installed my first windows server 2012 physically and as well as hyper-v VM and migrated a customer's domain over,

interestingly the VNC was working one week ago, as I could VNC to the server 2012 VM guest even if I didn't install any VNC server software on it.

now I have no luck at all to access via VNC to the virtual guest.

disable printer mapping on windows 2003 terminal server

if just for one user, quite interesting , there is no need for group policy

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff519145(WS.10).aspx

To configure per user printer redirection settings

  1. Do either of the following, depending on whether you are configuring settings for a domain user or for a local user on the terminal server.
    • To configure settings for a domain user, on a domain controller, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.
    • To configure settings for a local user, on a terminal server, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, click Computer Management, and then expand Local Users and Groups.
  2. In the console tree, locate the user for whom you want to configure printer redirection settings.
  3. Right-click the user name, and then click Properties.
  4. On the Environment tab, configure the following settings:
    • Connect client printers at logon

If you clear this check box, client printers are not automatically connected. However, a user can still manually map their client printer.
    • Default to main client printer

Select this check box to print to the default printer of the client. If you clear this check box, the default printer of the server is used as the default printer for all client sessions.

this is tested to be working
