Simple coexistence
With simple coexistence, all email addressed to your company’s domain will continue to be delivered to your on-premises Exchange server. However, email that is addressed to users that have been moved to Office 365 will be forwarded to their Office 365 mailboxes, allowing them to send and receive email from their Office 365 mailboxes using the same on-premises email address.
There are limitations with simple coexistence. Simple coexistence does not provide integration of the following messaging features, functions, and services:
Important: |
---|
To enable mail forwarding from your on-premises messaging environment to Office 365, the two systems must share the same SMTP domain and namespace. This requires you to create a custom domain that matches the on-premises SMTP namespace and domain. |
- Mailbox delegation—Users in one email environment (either Exchange Online or the on-premises environment) cannot assign mailbox management permissions to users in the other email environment.
- Free/busy information—When scheduling meetings, users in one email environment (either Exchange Online or the on-premises environment) cannot see the free/busy information for users in the other email environment.
