yeah, I still have a XP machine, a desktop, one reason is for the mustek usb old scanner
yeah, that old scanner only got xp driver (or the version below )
over the holidays, the XP PC costs me $20.00 more in terms of electricity
my plan is to copy the hard drive over to an old notebook
what a challenge ,
it started all about the size.
here is the laundry
1/ I took an image of the desktop hard drive (160GB)
2/ I tried to restore to the notebook hard drive (160GB), unfortuaately, its only showing as 149GB, shadowproect refuse to restore, as the original image got 152GB solid. even if it only has 21Gb data
3/ I tried to shrink the backup image, no luck, I guess the disk is badly fragmented
4/ virtual machines come to rescue, I restored the xp image to as a hyper-v VM,
5/ and in the VM I installed EASEUS free version , and shrink the partition by 4GB.
6/ and I this VM shadowprotect image again and tried to restore to the notebook. then error pops out, shadow protect v4 not license , HIR fail. of course my IT key is liensed v5.
tried to take the image use many versions of shadow protect include the RE disc
7/ in despair, I logged a case with SP support, I am told to use the RE disc to capture the image, they will send me an activation key.
8/ tried again , suddenly I found I could not mount the VM SP image, I got disk error. the reason is unknown....
9/ I tried another approach, directly restore the vhdx to the HP notebook
10/ first attempt, the dynamic disk is seen by SP as 1TB drive, no can do
11/ go back to the hyper-v dynamic disk, make a copy, convert it the a fixed size disk,
12/ restore to final vhdx xp vm disk direclty to the HP notebook using shadowprotect RE 5.2.4
13/ at the end of it, it asking for a license, I took a picture, then the notebook restarted, into windows XP ( this bit is bizare , got me out of the HIR trouble, maybe the original xp got many drivers already)
14/ anyway, re-activate windows xp license
15/ project completed
