libre in COlombia means pound ?

Yes, but spelled libra, and with a major twist.

In Colombia, when people say libra (pronounced lee-brah), they are indeed referring to a pound. However, a Colombian libra is exactly 500 grams (half a kilogram). [1, 2, 3]

This is different from the US/Imperial pound, which is only 453.6 grams. [1]

🛒 How it works in everyday life

• At the market: If you go to a Colombian grocery store or street market and ask for una libra de guanábana, they will weigh out exactly 500 grams. [1]
• The Math: Because it is precisely 500 grams, 2 libras = 1 kilo (1,000 grams). This makes it incredibly easy for locals to calculate weights mentally using the metric system.
  [1, 2]
• Spelling Note: Make sure to spell it libra. The word libre means "free" or "vacant" in Spanish. [1]
