An update domain is a group of resources that can be updated and rebooted if required at the same time. From time to time, patches and software updates need to be applied. Some updates require servers to be rebooted.
In an availability set , the VMs are distributed evenly across these domains.
During a planned update, only one update domain is updated at a time, meaning the VMs in that domain will be temporarily unavailable. Therefore, the minimum number of VMs that remain available during the update is the total number of VMs minus the VMs in one update domain.
