"Basket case" refers to a functionally incapacitated person, often due to extreme stress or anxiety, or a dysfunctional or failing business or organization. The phrase originated from WWI-era rumors of heavily wounded soldiers being transported in baskets. The term can also refer to the 1982 horror-comedy film Basket Case about a man with a telepathic, homicidal twin in a basket, and to the Green Day song "Basket Case," which explores themes of paranoia and mental distress.
