standalone Wss3 and email ... with the standalone installation, when you choose attendee's, it can't email because the windows server user account does have the email address attribute.
I wonder I can change the authentication provider somewhere to SQL server database.

ftp not working. it was working before. after some test, it is working inside LAN. But not working over the internet.

buffered? as the firewall (sonicwall) is configured to forward ftp packets to the FTP server.

ISP filtering ftp packets? DSL local exchange port got a problem?

the DLINK DSL router DSL-504T got its own packet filtering. on one of its setup pages, untick " block ftp requests".

the default master page is the default.master, right-click on that, "set as default master page" & "set as custom master page" are greyed out.

outlook 2003 test message filtering

in outlook 2003 setup test message, this message can be rejected by a smtp server.

in this case, File-new message should work if configured properly.

on the other hand, I had seen Outlook XP test message can go through some smtp server, but real-life message failed going through.

Xerox PCL 5 drivers

Xerox PCL 6 driver is available for those new docucenter MFCs. u/p 11111/x-admin.
but when setup scan-2-email address book, can't do it via the web interface (unless it is to import a contact book). so have to punch it from the panel.

But there is no PCL 5 drivers, only PS and PLC6. quite annoying as had a bit of problem with PCL6 in the past.

failed attempt to upgrade a Windows 2000 PC ... I hate the word failure to the bone. but i have to face the reality.

upgrading a generic windows 2000 OEM PC (celeron 3.0G with 1GB ram, GA-sis chipset based MB) ... argh ..
Windows XP OEM cd can't do upgrade.
Windows XP VL cd can start the upgrade process, unfortunately, the PC failed to restart in the upgrading process.

tried to use XP w/sp3 cd in the recovery console to revive the installation, the message was there was an upgrade in process.

after all this trying, choice is to install from scratch using XP-OEM. things are easy to install from scratch.

the bigest disappoint is with storagecraft's shadow protect. the IT edition can't image windows 2000 installation from the W2000 gui interface. in a rush trying to finish the work before christmas, booted the PC from IT ed CD, take the image. But can't put the image back, it wont boot.

use pptp join the PC back to the domain, using the same PC name, but have to reset the computer account first in the AD.

veritas 10 backup to disk restore and NTbackup restore

well, someone's foxpro database got scrambled last friday. so I have to restore last Thursday's backup.

the veritas backes up to disk drive, the best way to do it is to copy the backup data to the original location (backup-disk-folder). then do a catalogue. at last do a restore from there.

the same goes for NTbackup restore, copy the backup file to the original backup location, do a catalogue, then restore to the original location, if it is not overwriting the new data, then restore to a different location.

after a goodle search, it may related to a ribbon-worn problem underneath the keyboard. anyway, move that HP tool file away from the directory, to stop it popping out again

faulty beeping P4-PC made in 2005. try anohter memory module, beep stopped. but windows xp home keeps rebooting.

chnage memory  module to another slot. rebooting suddenly stopped. saving me reloading windows. sigh... windows recoverd from a system error.

upgrade IBM x226 server memory ... 2* 2GB kit. it was rack-mounted with rack-mount kit. quite easy, slide out, un-do the cover. of course 32bit windows 2003 standard can only see 4GB ram.

the scsi attached eonstor infortrend needs be reset/power-cycled as well. otherwise the windows 2003 upon restart wont see the luns properly.

the app support chap told me to install SQL tools. I pop in SQL 2000 CD, but that won't run on W7.

I am told to call all the people around the world to find out, including microsoft.

SQL 2005 mgmt studio seeems to run on W7.

after a tip, it is the MS SQL server 2005 feature pack - Backward compatibilty package I need. this is needed to work with SQL 2000 server. the original error is activex could not create object.

configure ODBC for SQL server on a Windows 2000 with Sp4. all the default updates are installed, but ODBC SQL server wizard can't find the sql server properly. manually download MDAC 2.8 w/ sp1. all things are fine.

Toshiba Portege R600 and an EU company glabal warning, what happened if a notebook get lost. someone has to scamble for days to get back on feet again.

well, an european company told their global distrubutors to get two identical notebooks. the idea is to back up the data, and copy the data back to the notebook that still available.

to do that a new toshoba portege r600 is ordered for the local boss. that's not the exact version of the old version. the cpu is different, and the new one got 3G wireless. this is not a cheap model. But I doubt it has a solid state hard drive.

so took an image of old R600 hard drive. the shadow protect speed runs at 26MB/s which is not bad.

luckily this user only stores his data under his profile. so Use synback to copy his profile to a network drive.

The new R600 is running W7, the original is running W-XP (got vista license downgraded).

Boot from Shadow Protect IT ed Q4'09, select legacy w2003 restore mode, surprsingly it won't see the w7 loaded disk.
boot again select vista based restore mode. things are fine.

Given a task to create a stand-alone sharepoint server.

use a W2k3 template in Xen Server 5.0, its a shadow protect image. it all went well.

a glitch happened when I tried to restart the the VM. in XenCenter It shows its still running. I can't shutdown. I even tried the command-line xe. still no luck.

after some google search, the answer is to close XenCenter, then open it again. so amazing.

now install WSS3.0 in non-domain mode, I will say not stand-alone mode. the windows server is in workgroup mode. I can choose web-frontend, then specify sql server. at the end of this, run configuration wizard, create first WSS web site.

yet to update the SQL 2005 to SP2.

yeah, got a chance to install a DLINK DSL-504T ADSL 2 +. download speed is 14Mb, upload speed is 950Kb. quite impressive. adsl 2 + theratical speed is 24Mb.

reader_s.exe and SAV 9.0

a new version of reader_s.exe appeared. SAV 9.0 detected somehing wrong with ndis, but can't kill it properly. upon reboot, the virus will come back. MS security essentials detected something wrong, but can't kill it properly either.

my fav malware scanner finnaly killed it in safe mode. anti-byte malware can't seem to kill it in normal mode.

reader_s.exe comes in the email (DHL). it plant itself in c:\documen~settings\username and c:\windows\system32, also an isq?????.exe is planted in user's startup directory.

it is very slow to kill on a Lenovo 2007 model notebook R61 wuth only 504MB ram.

deploy SEP 11.0.5 in a domain

to install SEP in a domain enviroment is easy. download the first CD from the symantec website once you have the renewal.

then extract the CD content, for a basic intallation is just a matter to click next next.

choose install SEP manager. then via the mgmt interface you can push out SEP client. it doesn't create \vphome directory or \clint-inst dir like the old version. if you have old version like SAV9. uninstall it, the defaulty password is symantec.

if you change servers, to redirect to a new server use synclink-replacer.

Symantec endpoint protection SEP 11.0.5, yeah, supposed to handle W7 and w2008 R2.
loaded on mine home windows 2003 machine, updated via my speed-throttled 56kbit ADSL link.
run scan again, it found a dozen trojan/viruses in my downloaded program/utils/cracks.
it is quite amazing as I have scanned those same files using various other anti-virus tools.
that proves again nothing comes free

for watever reason, if your computer asking for sku111.cab, you will have to find the cd. or the CD content is already copied somewhere else.

drupal and modules

install drupal core module. then install cck module. for drupal 5.3. the rpm install via fedora add/remove program. so that is a need put those modules in the correct directory.
the initial drupal site is also a drama, as lots of fiddling is invovled. however, README file helped a lot.

for the first time, I found MS Securty essentias can't kill the personal security virus. basically that   is a browser plug-in like win32extension.dll. it pops out funny msgs.
