windows 7 and low-profile video cards, ieee-1284, parallel-usb cable, argos
installed W7 Pro PC in a domain enviroment.
SAV v10.0 won't work with this version. symantec is going to drop support for v10.00 anyway.
so I have to install MS security essentials instead.
the challenge is to install Ieee-1284 device driver for a parallel to USB cable, then install driver for an Argos 203DT PLLB label printer.
another challenge is the generic PC is a low profile one, all add-on cards of course need to be low-profile (or half height). any video card upgrade need to be half-height. if no half height video card to be found, it is hard to cut it in half.

cracky sound from Philips 19" LCD with sound built-in
the lawyer decided that the sound from Philips 19" LCD monitor was too weak, too faint.... can't be heard properly.
so I called local philips support, the support guy just gave me a case #, and a courier guy will pick up the monitor. a local repairer will look at it.

you dont have permission to open this PST file
Graig the great, finally decided after 9 years of playing with windows 2000, that he needs a windows 7 computer.
I feel good to sell him a lenovo PC with some discount.
removed oem verision of o2k7, installed o2k7 small biz retail which is on special, same price as the basic version.
Craig has a peer-2-peer network in his office, so I copied his profile to another PC, then copied his data back to new PC.
No, windows 7 cardspace can't open windows 2000 cardspace files...or is it? somehow got around this problem..
the biggest problem is can't open PST files from outlook 2000(2002?). I kept getting error like "no permission ..." even if i granted the user full control.... never seen this kind of problem before...
install o2k7 sp2, then make a copy of the outlook2000 pst file like craigpst-copy, then outlook 2007 can open this file-copy now.
then the local LF2000 need a dongle to run.... the local law society techie Jenny just disappeared after my first phone call....
the last thing, is his dictation phone software is nowhere to be downloaded... olympus .... transcribe/DSS player.... the original supplier just disappeared... he is Not happy...

my nitemare continues with the sonicwall + linksys wAP combination ...
Michael is back in OZ, after a tour of NZ, but his notebook cannot connect to the main office.
The branch is setup as ADSL+Sonicwall+linksys WAP .... the notebook wireless get an IP address, but the notebook can't browse the internet...
connect a network cable to the notebook in question, checked it remotely everything seems fine. but just can't ping it, the DHCP server is enabled in the sonicwall, so use reserved IP address for that mac wireless card, then things started look good.
I have this similar weird problem last year at another site...

CD/DVD writer software for my windows 7 x64 ultimate notebook
CD/DVD writer software for my windows 7 x64 ultimate notebook .... yeah... I know W7 has an ISO writer, I found it very picky. It wont write some ISO files.
I loaded Ashampoo ... comes free from a PC World DVD, wrote a DVD, seemed ok. when I did a very slow online upgrade, it became a trial version. I register it. now I am get heaps of emails from various Ashampoo addresses. I think I will un-load it.
I have used UltraIso, its ok.
now I have another ISO burner imgburn.
for data writing, I have installed CDBurnerXP, that worked last night.

outlook 2007 instant search not working in Windows 2003 terminal server
well, this is probably by design as indicated by a thread at brianmadden.com.
I wished I had googled first before fiddling with various setting and outlook 2007 settings on windows 2003 terminal server.
I thought its the mailbox need some selection, but I can't select it for the instant search to crawl. I also disabled my fav terminal server group policy, ..... blush ....blush....
that being said, that's one reason some people advocate VDI...

an faulty Lenovo desktop PC and faint IBM support phone line
well, Cathy called that her PC not starting up, only power led flashing at front panel, nothing on the monitor.
luckily the PC is under warranty. I called local IBM/lenovo phone number. oh dear, their phone line is so noisy, its a mess. Someone answered my query, and said its the motherboard. their tech will be onsite to replace it next monday.
i am disappointed at the IBM support phone line quality. I am quite happy to talk to a white guy (IBM/Lenovo oz) or an indian guy (HP).
I just pray that IBM/Lenovo do not disappear, or HP with Intel or MS will rule the world.

there are thrid party production.... again all not 100% ...

there are thrid party production.... again all not 100% ...
also in outlook, need enable the "From" button...
setup a new iphone .... have to install itunes !!!
setup a new Iphone. put in the simcard. the iphone showed a lock and no service. also it indicated that I need install itunes in order to go further.
to change the simcard, you need the clip+needle thing.
oh...ssshhht, I finally downloaded itunes, and install it, then connected the iphone, saddenly the iphone came to life.
exchange client setup is easy, just the ssl is the default.

re-gain remote access to my Windows 2008 R2 server at work
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/06/25/how-to-remotely-enable-remote-desktop-terminal-services-or-rdp-via-registry-in-windows-2000xp2000vista2008/
I forgot to restart the windows 2008 R2 when I removed the remote desktop services ( terminal server role).
as a result I can remote in to install sharepoint 2010 beta.
the trick is to do shutdown -m \\myhostname -r
that solves the problem.

network files access is slow, files slow to open ... its a paging file problem
network files access is slow, files slow to open..... windows 2003 file server, an IBM x226.
used taskmgr to monitor the bandwidth usage ... its at 1% of 100Mb.
wondering why, since all PCs in the lan having the same problem, it must be the server.
updating the server and doing ping tests, there were packets losses, high pings to the gateway in a small network!
oh dear, luckily there was a clue in the veritas backup log, indicated second drive was failing which was used for internal backup. the 2nd dirve in x226 was also used for paging. so there was No paging file.
re-set the paging file location solved the problem.
test again on a client PC, network usage can go up to 67~68%.
No more cabling.

CD burner XP and MS security essentials ...
In my quest to find a cd-burner s/w, I downloaded CD Burner XP, well no problems last night to my notebook.
But MS security essentials gave me a warning on my desktop PC, and said something like "some unkown code" "do you want to send this file to MS for analysis", yes off course.

acer notebook reload and office 2007 student version vs smal biz version
acer desktops/notebooks do not have recovery partition (well hard to see), you need to press certain key combinations ( ALT+F10? )to make that happen.
if the system is pre-loaded with student version, but you have small biz version. you have to unload the student version.

configure iphone with a SBS 2003
the SBS 2003 self-signed cert expired. inetmgr, at the root of IIS, replace the expired certificate for a new one.
well, still not working. iphone reports an error "can't get mail". owa works both internally and externally.
luckily i tested the iphone with internal access point, all good. but still got problem via internet.
when i tried to access the IIS root via IE over internet. I got an access error. had a closer look, only to find out the IIS at the \ is configured IP addess restriction which limits access to the local LAN IPs. removing this limit, all sweet.

import csv contacts into public folder (exchange 2003)
no direct way to do that. import to personal folder first. then copy to public folder.
got a range error when directly import excel file.
then try csv format, this time outlook will install some translater. then it will ask for some match fields which is good.

continuing my struggle with OAB. press CTRL+ right-click on the outlook icon on the notification area. click
test email autoconfiguration. there is a response to the autodiscover.externaldomain.com
But there is a warning about the certificate because the cert on the server is not the same name.
No luck, outlook keeps prompting me for username/password, this is for the OAB.
the only progress is I got the address book URL
https://exch.mydomain.com/OAB/ba11614f-4e10-48e6-9872-375008c99cda/
tried to logon manually,.. no luck, keeps asking for u/p.
I wonder I need double check the internal OAB settings according to http://www.shudnow.net/2008/11/18/autodiscover-dns-certificates-and-what-you-need-to-know/

I should have posted this earlier. the problem is outlook 2007 cannot connect via outlook anywhere at all.
OWA is fine.
eventually I found in the server log that RPC over HTTPS was not installed.
it is a feature in windows 2008, not being installed by default.
