my otherwise good friday got ruined by WD elements 640 external hard drive.
plug into IBM x226 drive, the whole thing appears sluggish....
two drive letter appeared for this one. my co-work told me its WD new feature .... something like virual drive...
ohhhhhhhhh, kiss the llloooooooooooooooooooppppppppppppppp
this drive caused the x226 failed to boot.
attached this to an IBM x205 server, it seems fine.
I had pleasant experience with other models of external WD drive. now i am told those good ones are gone. only fancy ones here to chip me offfff
in my memory MY book is the one worked for me before ... as for the external elements ... dont really go to clinc with those things

install wsus 3.0 sp2 for use with n-able
I can't install wsus 3.0 on a standalone server with a standalone sql server, they should be domain-joined to be inter-operate.
shooot, so I have to use windows internal db.
another thing wsus 3.0 sp2 means wsus 3.0 with sp2.

IBM director 5.2 and N-able
for this org, I had removed IBM director 5.2. then deployed n-Able (Ncentral 7.0).
now I can just log onto the Ncentral to view the servers' health.
with IBM director 5.2, the capacity manager is not free. also the whole structure is tied to the AD domain. if you get many customers ie, heaps of independent forests, be it large or small... you can't vew things via one console / interface. its the same for the MS system centre, its tied to forest.
hence the markets are born for Kaseya, n-Able and many others . ... MSP ..

after failing to connect for hours, I had to enable port 22 outgoing, then I can remotely log onto target server.
if outgoing blocked, you will see un-able to establish ssh tunnel. funny I couldn't see logs in the sonicwall tz-180.

attempt to recover a synology DS107e drive
the user said he couldn't access his DS107e drive.
I downloaded the synology assistant, it reported that the device hasn't got firmware.
so I downloaded the firmware, it warned me about wiping the data. but the user wanted the data.
pull out the hard drive from the enclosure. did a brief seagate tools test, it indicated the drive physically seemed fine. I think its quite hot tho.
... sigh ... use a toll called explorer2fs, no luck
on a windows 2008 PC with sata cable attached, those 2fs tool can't find the drive, windows diskmgmt can't find either.
try a windows 2003 PC with a USB enclosure, the diskmgmt see the drive as unknown, but those 2fs tools can't find anything...

SBS 2008 very slow to log on "applying computer settings"
SBS 2008 Issue “Applying Computer Settings” message
http://achugh.wordpress.com/2009/09/07/more-on-sbs-2008-issue-applying-computer-settings-message/
your friend disabled IPV6 in sbs 2008. that caused the sbs 2008 slow to start. what is more is that the exchange serivce wont start properly even if triggered manually.
It took someone's SBS 2008 1 hour 45 minutes to start short of exchange services.
after the IPV6 being added back to the nic, it took about 14 minutes.
funky, sbs 2k8 doesn't use windows smtp service, it has its own exchange transport...
that ipv6 was disabled about 7 months ago, the server wasn't being rebooted.

configure Sony Erricssion saito (uar1?) phone for SBS 2008
pop3 wont work straight away, keeps asking for passwords. POP3 may default to TLS/SSL. made a quick phone call to local sony support. the guy said its better to use RoadSync.
with the help of the phone user, start roadsync in apps (maybe in organizer), follow the wizard, activate it.
its fine. but after two hours, no new messages, change auto-sync to manual, saddenly another 30 msgs came in. manually doing updates, the screen showed it keeps doing updates....what a day...the user is extremely disappointed ...
I am disappointed too, the phone itself is so hard to navigate.
btw, sync mail is sony's own mail stuff.

(didn't catch the name), this process related to the finger reader or the builtin camera. this model hasn't got the finger reader, so it may be used for camera for face-recognition
my face wont be used on this netbook hopfefully, so I disabled it to reduce the CPU usage.

oh dear with 2 megabit pixels. move sim and memory card over to the current one. some mesgs, contacts and pics left behind the old one.
the correct way to do that is to use nokia PC tools to backup the old one, then restore to the new one.

Recession and Mdaemon licenses
a one year ago, we could not downgrade the 50 user license to 25.
now we can downgrade to a dozen users.
the ugly things is when I put the mdaemon and securityplus new license, the mdaemon server restarted, and new license became active. well I were not prompted as to which user account I need to keep, which user to prune. There maybe a prompt about a crash sometime later, but I am in a mode to re-create active user accounts.
the good thing is when I put a user back, md will automatically put user's aliases and forward back as well.
what a day!@#$%^&*

remove SONY VGN-B88GP keyboard and install sound driver
I was looking to the VGN-B88GP manual. I finally find the manual on a website. But the driver on SONY's website is not working for this model ( is there a desktop model of this notebook).
anyway back in 2005, I put a copy of drivers from CD on the D: drive. this comes handy today.
to remove the keyboard, un-do the screw at the back of the enclosure, then at the front of the keyboard, there are 3 retractable tab between those F-keys. use jewel tools gently push and prick open the keyboard from the enclosure.

HP elitebook not getting IP address again
early morning wake - up call. that HP elitebook not getting IP address again. remove MS security essentials, it gets IP no problem.
so I put symantec back on. still good.
ah, ... , its better to re-load.
there is another problem. the nb sometimes won't boot into windows, power off, power-on again, it seems ok. But it should boot into w-xp with or without external monitor attached? or should it? the problem is sometimes nothing on the LCD, but other lights on (may not hdd light).
called HP support, the first guy said un-plug battery, and AC power, press the power button to release static. that I did.
however a few minutes later, the same thing happened again. called HP support again. the HP tech asked me to attached a screen to it, same problem this time. they agreed to come out next biz day.
I did a bios update still no luck.

Exchange 2010 on a windows 2008 keeps rebooting on a Xen 5.5 host
this windows 2008 with Exch2010 is running fine for a number of weeks as a VM inside a Xen 5.5 host.
it started rebooting recently. It appeared related to some windows updates.
upon rebooting, the windows send error report to MS, and check solutions online.
finally it gives a clue about x64 bit cpu clock something, the windows are complaining about device drivers.
think ouside the box, there is another VM running on this host. the performance monitor indicates this XP-VM is using 100% CPU. turning this 100%-cpu-usage XP-VM off helps the other server VM stay alive.

after the transfer, some secured contente (itunes) asks for the original password. I skipped it, it didn't ask twice.

missing messages in PST file
I had used shadow protect imaged this sony notebook before, funny this time when I copied the pst file back, there is a gap in between. bizzare thing is the pst file time-stamp is ok.
then started process of elimination, by deleting all old messges, there isn't much left in the pst file, so there aren't many messages in the pst.
he must have used something esle for email.

HP elitebook not getting IP address
saddenly this notebook not getting IP address, set static IP can't ping anywhere.
re-set TCP/IP like netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt, still no luck
un-install symantec end-point, its all good now. SEP must be corrupt.
